In September 2017, Hurricane Irma made landfall on the island of Barbuda, causing unprecedented destruction. All inhabitants of the island were evacuated to the larger island of Antigua. Although many residents have returned, reconstruction has been painfully slow. One of those residents, Ms. Mabel Francis, lost the roof off her house and most of her possessions. She is a retired teacher on a fixed income, and she had no insurance on the house. Now, over 18 months later, she is still living in a room of a neighbor's home. She has no electricity and no refrigeration. Worse, she has no means to repair her roof and make her house habitable again.

Mabel has spent most of her life helping other people, both as a teacher and, later, working for the local government, the Barbuda Council. Although she has some family in the area, they too are struggling to get back on their feet. The structure of Mabel's house is intact, but the entire roof needs to be replaced. Additionally, one interior wall must be rebuilt, as well as replacement of 8 windows and 7 doors (both interior and exterior). The population of Barbuda prior to Hurricane Irma was only about 1600, and many residents have not returned. There are very limited public funds to help people like Mabel.

I am a surgeon at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. I have known Mabel for the last 4 years. When I heard about her plight, I felt compelled to help her. The amount of money that I am able to contribute will only go so far. So, I am trying to enlist the help of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. In this way, we may be able to get Mabel back on her feet. Thanks for anything you can do!

Disclaimer: We have been unable to link Mabel's PayPal account to GoGetFunding.com. The mechanisms needed to channel donations directly to the recipient are limited or non-existent in many countries. Therefore, I will accept the donations on the behalf of Mabel (via PayPal) and send the funds to her. I will provide transparency of this process in the form of updates. I was very reluctant to set up the campaign this way, but we have found no alternatives.

Update posted by Steven Rodgers at 07:07 pm

Although we didn't raise as much as I had hoped, it's certainly more than any one individual would typically give. I am sending Mabel a check for $2458.80. I hope that this helps her in some significant way. Good luck, Mabel!
