The Maasai people are the only community who are still maintaining and living according to their native ways of life. Although they still live by their customs and tradition they are still adopting the western way of life including education system, religious and social systems.
The provision of social service in most of the maasai communities in the district is still a challenge due to their ways of life and environment they live.
Like most of the Maasai villages, Orkiu village face the same challenge on social services education inclusive. Children from Orkiu village travel 3km to 9km to a nearby primary school in neighboring villages.
This makes children who need pre-primary education to hardly attend school and hence makes them lagging behind on their next classes and hence making their performance very poor compared to other children.
In 2003 one of the catholic sisters saw the challenge that kids were facing, she built a community nursery school with a primary aim of helping these kids to access a pre primary education. The nursery school since then has been used by the community; local teachers have always been volunteering their time and skills to help these kids. As a way to help these teachers, the community decided to establish a system through which these teachers would be motivated. As a result, they started contributing a total of 3,000/- Tshs for every parent whose child attends the school. Also the nearby primary school supported the community by providing the training to the two of its teachers. Despite all the effort and commitment of the community and other stakeholders, the school needs refurbishment of the classroom building and the torn toilet. Furthermore, teaching materials and illustration materials are need in short time for better future Maasai children.
The project is Allocated in Loliondo, NgorongoroDistrict Arusha Region.
