We are currently volunteering in Tanzania with International Volunteering HQ and are working in a school/daycare for children aged 2-7, teaching Maths and English. In the school there are 60 children and only 3 teachers (including the head teacher).

The school’s conditions are extremely underdeveloped. The children do not have access to stationery, such as exercise books, pens or pencils. As a result, in many of the lessons there is no paper for the children to take down notes, which really inhibits their ability to learn. As well as this, they have three very small class rooms in the school with limited tables and chair space for the children to work - meaning each of the desk spaces are extremely crowded. In addition, hygiene at the school is very poor which can be extremely dangerous, especially during the pandemic - for which there are zero restrictions in Tanzania. The toilet is a hole in the floor and there is no sink or soap to wash one’s hands and no running water.

The kitchen is right next to the toilet where the headteacher cooks breakfast and lunch (a simple meal of porridge) for all the children at the school - this is a must as many of the children do not have a guaranteed meal at home for the day. Sometimes the gas stove the headteacher cooks on, does not have enough gas and so she has to cook outside on an open fire, taking valuable teaching time away from the children.

Having experienced all of this, we now feel compelled to try and do something to help and so we are starting a fundraising campaign to try and raise money for the school. We would like to provide the school with enough books, paper and pencils for all the children so they can be fully engaged in their lessons and so improve their education. We would also like to improve the hygiene conditions and the infrastructure if possible.

Being here has made us realise, even more, how extremely lucky we are to have such an incredible and privileged education. Now we want to beable to pass on our knowledge of education to these children to try and give them a brighter future and a better start to life.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. Us and the school are so grateful for anything you can give!
