Meet Lily. She is a 4 and a half year old Spaniel X. She is the happiest and craziest puppy you will ever meet. She loves making noise, playing rope, running and sneaking a kiss when you expect it least.
On Wednesday 25 July 2018 it looked like she had some stomach problems so we decided to take her to our local vet to have it checked out. After taking an x-ray the vet told us she has some inflammation in her back, but it's nothing to worry about.
No more than 18 hours later, we decided to go check on our Lily during lunch. We came home to a puppy that was clumbsy and falling as she tried to walk.
We rushed her to a specialist vet, by the time we got there, Lily was dragging her little body across the floor. This was roughly 30 minutes later.
The back problem progressed so quickly that she was paralyzed in her back legs.
The Doctor rushed her to a CT scan and advised us that Lily needed emergency surgery.
Now, if you are a dog lover, you would understand that the choice we faced was no choice at all. Lily is only 4 and a half years old. She has 10 more healthy years with us. Except for her back, she is healthy. She is happy. And she is like a child in our house.
Without hesitation we told the Doctor to go ahead. Save our Lily.
Lily had a slipped disk in her lower back which caused major compression and nerve damage.
The surgery went as well as it could possibly go. They removed the matter and cleared the compression in the spinal cord.
After the surgery we found out what it would cost. We were also then told that we are looking at a minimum of three days in hospital and up to as much as two weeks.
The current estimated cost is R30 000.
We call on our friends, and on theirs.
We call on dog lovers everywhere.
We call on all who understand that not having this done for Lily was never an option.
