Last December 2018, my brother, Lawrence (22) was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Malignant Mediastinal Non-Seminomatous Germ Cell Tumor.
Germ Cell Tumors are quite uncommon. They are cells that develop into reproductive cells, so the tumor usually occurs in the testis or ovaries. Germ Cell Tumors that develop elsewhere in the body are rare. In my brother's case, the tumor (11.7cm at largest diameter) is located in the mediastinum which covers the areas in-between the heart & lungs. Surgery is out of our options since the tumor has already metastasized on his left pleura, a thin covering that protects the lungs, and eventually neighbouring organs & bones.
As of August 2019, He has undergone 2 chemotherapy treatments. The first regimen (Bleomycine, Etoposide, Cisplatin), yielded a partial response for 4 cycles. The second (Gemcitabine, Oxaliplatin), showed no response by the 3rd out of 6 cycles. The disease has proven to be very aggressive as the tumor & metastases regained it's size and more.
We are now preparing for the next series of chemotheraphy treatment (Cisplatin, Ifosfamide, Vinblastine). Similar to the first regimen, this is a High Dose Chemotherapy Treatment. It requires my brother to be confined for 4-5 days every cycle, as the drugs are administered for 3 consecutive days.
I'd like to ask for your help in this fight. We are grateful for any support, big or small.
