My name is Lance-Selae August, and I just completed my degree, a BA majoring in Theatre & Dance Studies and Media & Writing at the University of Cape Town. I completed my degree within the prescribed minimum time of three years.

I finished off my degree strongly, obtaining first-class passes (distinctions) for African Studies, General Music Knowledge, and Directing. I also obtained near-distinctions for Applied Theatre, and Contemporary Performance. My final GPA is 68%.

I am a student leader at the institution, currently serving on the Students' Representative Council, as the Undergraduate Academics Co-ordinator. Prior to this, I've served on the Humanities Students' Council, and house committee of the residence where I stay. I was also a class representative for 5 of my courses.

I have the Warden's Award for Exceptional Student Leadership, as well as the Investec and Department of Student Affairs Award for outstanding leadership in Media and the Arts.

I was made two postgraduate offers: (a) Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Training teaching in Dramatic Arts), and (b) BA Honours in Theatre and Performance (Applied Theatre). My fee block prevents me from registering for postgraduate studies also. I have so much valuable contributions to make in postgraduate research, as I want to build an arts-based model of teaching that enhances the delivery of the school curriculum to learners with physical and intellectual impairments.

My degree was largely funded by financial aid at UCT, and by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. However, there was a yearly requirement to pay an expected family contribution, of R7100 or $485. This amount accrues interest on a monthly basis. At the start of every academic year, this amount held me from registering. I however managed to source funds to pay it yearly. Now, the same amount is holding me back from graduating, and I need assistance in paying it off.

Any assistance will go a long way in enhancing my ability to make education better for learners with disabilities.
