If you have not heard, I was recently accepted at New College, The Honors College of Florida. Yay! This school has a unique teaching style, that is fast-paced and research based. I will work one-on-one with a professor in my major; a professor who, 97% of the time, has received the highest degree in their field. Even better, I might be presented with the opportunity to be an accomplice, with credit given to me, on a professor's research, presenting my work and name to the whole of the academic world! New College will require me to do two independent, in-depth, studies while I am at the school, on any topic I find interesting at the time. I will be required, to graduate, to present a Senior Thesis, which lays the groundwork, and sometimes the bulk, of a graduate thesis. These present me with an academic challenge that I find different, and more than that, exhilarating. The school also has a partnership with Oxford University in England, specifically for Psychology, that would basically fulfill a life-long dream that I have, so I will definitely be taking advantage of this opportunity.
My Area of Study is in Psychology. As I pursue higher education, I have chosen to specialize with children and youth. I want to work closely with child services and provide help to children who have been abused and neglected. I want to help teens suffering from depression and anxiety. I believe that this school's research opportunities, fast pace, and one-on-one teaching style will be a great fit for me.
I can't wait to get started this fall. I already earned 56 college credits through my dual enrollment at a local college, graduating with a 4.0. Since I have earned so many credits, I am beginning my freshman year as a junior, and will be graduating within two and a half years with my bachelor's. At least, as long as I complete my Senior Thesis, and defend it correctly in front of the Board.
New College is an out of state school for me, and as I'm sure you are aware, that equates to exorbitant fees, triple of the in-state tuition. I know that you all have your own set of expenses, and there are many other charities that you are passionate about. Yet, if you can donate even some small amount to "keep Kelly Debt-Free" I will be eternally grateful.
