Campaign Story
Life can change in one flick of a finger. Sometimes it can be an amazing change. Other times, devastating. And yet, there are those people who can look at devastating change as just another opportunity to meet life’s many challenges, learn from it, discover things about herself and the world around her, and grow.
One of those people is Jerlyn. A passionate yoga student and teacher, she just got back from her yoga teacher training when she felt a lump in her left breast. Her first thought was not how this would affect her but how it would affect the people around her emotionally and most importantly, financially. Aside from giving private yoga lessons, she is also a Corporate English Trainer.
Fast forward to after being diagnosed with HER2 Positive, ER/PR negative Stage 3C Breast Cancer, she knew her biggest challenge was not if she was strong enough to fight cancer but the reality that her salary and her medical insurance will not be enough to cover the long and very expensive treatment. Her funds are dangerously low now as the treatments have been very expensive. Her treatments consist of Trastuzumab, Docetaxel, and Carboplatin infusion every 21 days. She also gets a a minimum of three Filgrastim shots after every chemo to help increase her WBC. She needs a total of 18 cycles of chemotherapy. She also needs to undergo mastectomy and radiation therapy.
After not knowing where to get funds for her treatment to being on her way to her fifth session of chemotherapy, she has re-discovered the kindness of not just the people who care about her but even the kindness of strangers. She has discovered the power of focusing only on healing, progress, and purpose and not on the negativity that cancer brings to people’s lives. She has chosen to never give up and to just continue fighting the good fight not just for herself but also for the people who have been working hard to help her. Jerlyn is still working not just because she needs to but because she doesn’t want cancer to take over her life. She wants to continue living her life despite illness. She has also found another purpose in life which is learning what she can about yoga for cancer patients and survivors so that she can share it to others like her. She is full of hope and inspired to just keep moving forward because even after receiving devastating news from her doctor, she has discovered that people can still be amazingly generous and kind.
Help us to continue to give her hope.
Help us help her fight and beat cancer.
