Last year I was blessed by the generous help I received to support my fight to beat breast cancer. I want to pay it forward and help my young niece, Jaredine, who has been battling with a facial hemangioma since her infancy. At birth her mother noticed a tiny patch of blood on the inner surface of her left lower lip. When she was four months old the lip started swelling and veins in the area under the lip became visible with the skin turning bluish purple.
Diagnosed with hemangioma, Jaredine was treated with intralesional steroid injection when she was about two years old. The injection was administered in six sessions with an interval of two weeks between each session. A team of at least three doctors had to hold her down every session as no local anesthetic was prescribed. All six sessions were completed but that did not make any difference.
Over the years Jaredine was taken to medical consultants for updates. Lumps of about an inch have developed in her tongue and chin and the swelling on her lips has grown in proportion to her physical growth. When she turned eight, she started to undergo laboratory tests while considering a second-line treatment. For a year she took Propranolol tablets which didn't work. Then she shifted to Sirolimus medication. Six months into taking Sirolimus tablets she developed an infection and upon the doctor's advice she discontinued this medication.
Jaredine is now eleven and has finally found the right surgeon to correct her current condition. On June 8 2018 she underwent surgery to remove nodules on her tongue and jaw and injected steroids into her bottom lip. She had to remain in the hospital for eight days and is now recovering at home. She will have her follow up doctor appointment in two weeks and then the intended plan is to schedule another surgery to address her herangioma in her lower lip.
