Sri Lanka being a developing country boast of having the lowest infant mortality rate (8% per 1000 live births) in South Asia and one of the lowest among Asian countries the reason being the availability of advice and clinical facilities to pregnant mothers during their pregnancy. Also, the health system in Sri Lanka provides such free Medical facilities to pregnant mothers during delivery, however they do not include the maternity bag that the Pregnant mothers are advised to bring whenthey are going to the hospital for delivery of the child.
Most of the mothers are able financially to buy the items required for the maternity bag. However, those poverty-stricken mothers which amounts to about 20% of the total are finding it difficult to afford it. The Rotary Club of Battaramulla is planning to provide 100 maternity bags to underprivileged and impoverished mothers to be in one of the rural areas in Sri Lanka.
