One of the most heartbreaking moment I had here while working with the street children, the talibes. A few weeks ago, we took a trip to visit a few daaras (religious school) in Saint Louis, here is where I finally met Hassan, and by mere coincidence his mother had finally come to visit him after four months, hearing the news of what had happened to her son.

About three months ago Hassan, like any other talibe boy, he was crossing the main street to go out to beg and look for food, during this moment, he did not see a passenger car heading his way. The speeding car, did not stop, hit his directly and ran over him, crushing him under the car. Hassan was seriously injured and unconscious when it happened. The locals and the marabout (teacher), rushed him to the local hospital as he sustained serious injuries on his legs, arms, back and head. Hassan at this moment had gone into a comatose stage and had to go through intensive surgery. He was in coma for a few weeks and they did not think he would make it.

When Hassan finally awoken from his coma, he was still in shock to realise that what had happen to him. He had no memory of the accident. He lost his left leg, as it had to be amputated up to his knee. His right wrist was twisted and had no movement, the wrist bones were crushed and crossed over. His right leg was injured, twisted and had little movement, his back full of bruises and deep scars on his head. The doctors had to cut his leg off and patch him up to try to save his life, that was their only choice then.

Due to the inadequate hospital facilities, Hassan receive basic emergency treatment and a quick solution to this unfortunate accident, which usually is amputation of limbs and patching up the rest of the broken bones. There was no further care for him as he was discharged, medical bills to be paid and a trauma of his own to survive.

Hassan is unable to walk, always in pain, unable move his hand or even speak much about anything. It's just the most difficult life for a 12 year old boy to have.

Issa, the founder of Maison De Gare, a non-profit for street children had been assisting them closely, paying part of the medical bills and supporting them as they can. But it wasn't enough as the medical bills were very high, they had to collect a donation from locals and friends to pay the balance outstanding. It cost close to US$3300 just for the surgeries.

Dear friends, I wish to help Hassan and his poor family, they come from the very small village in Casamance, south of Senegal, they are unable to bare any cost of the follow up surgeries, rehabilitation and medical care. They are farmers, with no income and live far away from the city. The mother was in tears trying to figure out what to do next. She is unable to take him home as he needs the care here.

Hassan still needs follow up surgeries, to re-structure the bones for his wrist and fingers, correction surgeries for his right leg and rehabilitation. He needs support with the medical bills, maybe they can get a new motorise wheelchair and more medical care. This can only be done in a proper hospital in the capital city in Dakar. And with enough funds only. Street children here get no support from private hospitals, no government supports, no claims, no funds, nothing. As some locals say to me, "If you are injured, you are poor and have no money, you will die outside the hospital."

I wish the very least we can do is give him a little chance for a brighter future, for him to at least be able to walk again, with having proper motion for his hands and the other leg. I believe there is a reason why I ended up here, why I met the mother the same day of my visit. We are the only once who can help them today. We have the means to do something, for Hassan to be a boy again.

We have set up a crowdfunding page dedicated to Hassan, for his follow up surgeries, rehabilitation and medical bills. I really hope, truly wish all of us, my friends, travellers and tribe, comes together to help Hassan, even as little as US$5 is something and we can all collectively get him the help he deserves. Our goal is to raise a min of US$3000, but anything more will be wonderful as he needs all the care and support he can get.

The family awaits for our help now and once the funds are enough to do his admission into the private hospital in Dakar.
