Overview

Last February 2019, our colleague and dear friend, Harry Julve, went to his doctor due to severe headache and nausea that wouldn’t go away. After undergoing numerous medical tests, he was diagnosed with Fungal Meningitis and was immediately admitted to the hospital.

Fungal Meningitis is a rare infection that affects the membranes surrounding a person’s brain and spinal cord. If untreated, the disease is life-threatening.

In Harry’s case, his early treatment involves taking prescriptions of strong antifungal medications that usually costs in total: Php 9,000.00 (USD 171.00) per day. This is just to initially control the infection. And there are other periodic expenses like spinal fluid tests, blood transfusions, and others that add to his daily medications.

Unfortunately, Harry’s employer-provided health insurance has already been maxed out just from his first laboratory tests. At the moment, his family has been paying for his treatment using their personal savings. However, the cost of Harry’s medicines, tests and hospital bills have become too high for his family and loved ones to bear so they had to apply for loans and rely on donations. Over the past few days, they have been struggling financially to afford their daily hospital expenses.

Despite his family’s efforts to stay ahead of the disease, another painful blow was struck when Harry’s father was recently hospitalized sometime in the middle of March due to formations of gallstones in his gallbladder. Now, he and his family are fighting two great battles at different ends at the same time.

About Harry

Harry is an adventurous 36-year-old who loves discovering new places. He is passionate about photography and new experiences. The third child among four siblings, his father works as a part-time mechanic and farmer while his mother is a dedicated housewife. For years, Harry has been living and working in Cebu City, Philippines but his parents and youngest sibling still live in a humble, old wooden house in a rural part of the country.

A devoted brother, Harry considers supporting his baby sister’s education from high school through college as his greatest achievement. After many years of providing educational support, his sister is now a degree holder in Civil Engineering and is preparing to take her board exam.

As a colleague and friend, Harry is a joy to work with. He is quick to appreciate and cracks jokes to make the work slog a little easier for all of us. He would frequently burst into song and dance just to entertain us. Harry has always had our backs and we respect him because of his honest feedback and opinion.

After all the sacrifices and wonderful things that he has done for us and his family, we are glad to give back and help in any way we can. Thus, we initiated this fundraising campaign to help him and his family pay for his ever-increasing medical bills.

The funds we hope to receive will be used to pay for his year-long treatment. Specifically, we will use the money to purchase the antifungal medications Harry needs. By securing Harry’s medication, we can somehow help him and his family achieve a significant victory over a very difficult time in their lives.
