Help Hannah Stay at her Dream School
Hannah Ernstzen is in Grade 8 at her dream school, Somerset College (http://somersetcollege.org/ ) in Somerset West, Cape Town South Africa. This school is one of the top rated schools in the country. This co-ed school offers a quality education and is the only local school to offer both of her first choice sports, Rowing and Field Hockey. Being a Non Profit Independent school (meaning all funds raised are only put back into the operations of the school), this quality education comes at a high financial cost. Apart from the schools fees extramural activities (Music; Camps and Sports activities) come at an additional cost. Payment for her education would not have been a problem; however her mom is at an advanced stage of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and is no longer able to work. The costs of medical treatment over many years and the loss of a second income have crippled the family financially. We have now been informed that inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain caused by the disease has permanently affected her vision, aspects of her speech and memory.
Despite the negative emotional impact of her mom’s illness, Hannah has still excelled academically and in sport this year because of the schools support system. She has maintained an A aggregate (>80%) for all four exam assessments for this academic year https://www.dropbox.com/sh/z1snnx6omxs0f25/AACnFB6... and has represented the U14 Girls Provincial team in Field Hockey at the national inter-provincial tournament. She is also currently the top U15 girl in ergo rowing trails at Somerset College and finished third at the Ergo Regatta. Rowing has become Hannah's mechanism for coping with the stresses of dealing with an ill mother.
Hannah has made many personal sacrifices as a result of her mom’s disease and has often given up the activities of a normal 14 year old teenager to attentively spend time assisting her mom with whom she has an amazing relationship.
We would dearly love to ensure that Hannah is afforded the opportunity to realise her goal of a quality education at her dream school.
Hannah adopted a disadvantaged Play School in Grade 7 as part of her Leadership Program. She organised for the establishment of a food garden that is used to supplement the schools feeding program. Hannah would like to pay forward a nominal amount that is raised through your generosity to the Playway Play School as it remains her charity of choice.
