My name is Hanli Smith. I am a 23-year-old South African who recently received the wonderful opportunity to do my master's degree in Forensic Science at the University of Technology Sydney. My end goal for studying in Australia would be to ultimately immigrate and receive citizenship. This year I am working as a waitress to help fund my studies. Unfortunately, South Africa's currency is weak and would thus be incredibly expensive to fulfil my dream. I appreciate any assistance contributed to funding my and my partner's journey to Australia. The images attached include my Confirmation-of-Enrolment as well as the general estimated cost provided by UTS for the duration of our stay.

Why immigrate?

Firstly, living in South Africa has numerous problems uncommon in first-world countries like Australia. We have had on and off load-shedding for over a decade now where the government would cut the power to numerous areas for two and a half hours at a time daily or twice a day because there is not enough electricity to supply the entire country (See: South African energy crisis.). Water crises also happen frequently enough. South Africa also has a labour crisis, where there is not enough work for the population which causes 55.5% of the population to live in poverty (See: Poverty & equity brief). Due to the poverty rate, South Africa is rated as the country with the third highest crime rate (See: Crime Rate by Country 2022).

You are probably wondering why a forensic science student would move away to a country with significantly less crime. While there is a ton of work for me to do here, I would have a horrible time. The South African Police Service is known to be corrupt. I would have to work with evidence of horrible quality due to tampering of evidence as well as contamination of evidence due to improper handling of evidence. As I am interested in the field of crime scene investigation, one of my previous lecturers told me of how she knew a crime scene investigator who had to go to a crime scene by herself in an informal settlement in the middle of the night unarmed while pregnant due to lack of staff. Equipment and evidence kit shortages also happen frequently. I would love to be able to do my job without factors above my control interfering with my productivity. My relative, Micki Pistorius, a retired forensic psychologist and author advised me to emigrate as I would never be employed as a forensic scientist in South Africa and if I do, I would have a horrible time.

Receiving my master's degree from an Australian university would grant me a graduate visa that I can use to start working toward citizenship.

Final words
