Help ‘Hamsmai’ For His Cochlear Implant

My only son Hamsmai Debbarma was born on 29 January 2018.

By birth he was good and perfect. After one day we got discharge from the hospital ( Khowai District Hospital). But after 2 days of birth suddenly he had severe jaundice and my son's skin colour was turning into yellow at the midnight.

At one point he stopped taking milk form his mother because he can't. We were very scared. Immediately we take him to the hospital again and they referred him to the Agartala GBP hospital (Govind Bhallab Pant Hospital). It is 65-70 kilo meters far away from our home town. It was 02:30 a.m. and we did not get any ambulance. Somehow we rent a car and started to go GBP Hospital. It takes 3 hours to reach. We arrived GBP at 05:30 am.They gave him Photo therapy all day. And all day I have to run from here to there for his blood test. Doctors said without the blood test result they can not do further treatment. Here comes the most toughest moment in my life. He stopped crying, but somehow he can move little bit. Nothing we can do, only we can do is pray and cry. After long day of waiting Doctors decided to take risk, after seeing his bilirubin test. His bilirubin was 28 which is very high. Doctors decided to exchange his blood. It was about 05:30 pm when they started the operation. They take our baby into the ICU. We can't even see him. All we can do is cry and pray. The operation was successful but still the bilirubin was high. Next day again they give him photo therapy. He cried little bit, so we find some relief. After giving him photo therapy all day they decided to exchange his blood again. 2nd operation also was successful. We got some relief. 4 days we eat nothing. Only water. He was admitted for 7 days in GBP Hospital. After 7 days they gave him discharge.

After discharge he stayed 3 days normal at home. We thought everything went normal. But now he has got second problem. Now he is starting to cry too much. If he starts crying at 08:30 am he will stop by 05:00- 05:30 pm. Continuously he was crying 3-4 hours. We take him to the GBP Hospital again. Doctors said it is the side effects from Jaundice which is called Kernicterus. Kernicterus is a bilirubin-induced brain dysfunction. We were shocked. But whatever it is we are happy because our baby is alive. We love him very much. We spend another week there in GBP hospital. After a week we get discharge from the Hospital.

After spending about a week at home again he started to cry continuously. Again we take him to the GBP Hospital and spend another week. This time we can realize that he lost his hearing. But that doesn't mater. He was OK that's we love. We back to the home again.

He was still crying continuously. After 4 months of age he stopped crying like that. Here in Tripura doctors said he may be or may not be able to walk. Now he is 17 months old and he can't even sit and lift his head. Now he is under treatment of physio therapy at Fernando Rehabilitation Center but still no improvements. Doctors recommend that as fast as his early age it will be good to implant his cochlear which will make him able to hear and speak, as much as there will be some chances to change in him physically. So we want to go to Bangalore/Delhi for his better treatment. But we can't afford the expenses. I am a journalist and Video Editor in Rising Tripura News Channel. My Father is a teacher in a JB school. In our family we are 5 members. It is very hard to afford the expenses.

We want him to call us Mommy-Daddy, we want him to walk with us by holding my hands. we want to make him play like other children's play. But that's all our dream.
