My friend, Gillian Schutte, and her husband, Sipho Singiswa, lost their beloved and only child, Kai, 20, to suicide last Sunday December 1st.
Kai was a university student at Wits in Johannesburg. He was very close to both parents. They describe their Kai as sweet-natured, popular, fun-loving, warm, affectionate, an independent existential/spiritual thinker, intuitive, artistic, emotionally developed, highly intelligent, playful and, above all, loving. Their golden boy, born to love and be loved.
The gift of innate sensitivity does not always make it easy to be in the world. Kai had experienced anxiety and depression in recent times, for which he had sought and received support.
While Gillian and Sipho mourn, the realities of the material world sadly do not vanish. I am sure you can agree that the last thing grieving parents need to be dealing with is bringing in enough for the basics. No parent should be concerned with this stress.
That is why I am asking you to contribute to this crowd-funder set up for them at this time. Gillian and Sipho are freelance artist/filmmakers, writers and activists and their work is incredibly valuable and important in contemporary South Africa. Freelance work does not have safety nets however. No amount whatsoever is too small.
