Gauguin is 24 years old and was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011. His mom Ane has spend all that she has on trying to get Guagain the best treatment for his leukemia. Unfortunately, all her funds have run out and Ane needs funds urgently to get Gauguin the treatment and vitamins he needs in South Africa

Please see a letter below written by his oncologist Dr Yusuf Mayet

29/06/2011, Gauguin Kleynhans has been a patient at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Medical Oncology Department, since 29/06/2011. He was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and was treated with systemic chemotherapy at the time, according to ALL treatment protocol of the unit.

He was in remission following the first month of chemotherapy, as proven by Bone Marrow aspiration and trephine investigation. He had a trial of maintenance oral 6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate in December 2011 and May 2012, but due to myelosuppression he could not continue this treatment. In January 2012 a repeat bone marrow aspiration and trephine revealed no active disease. He had since followed up at the Oncology outpatients’ clinic and had remained well.

In December 2015, a pancytopenia was seen on his FBC result and a suspicion of disease relapse was feared. BMAT revealed a therapy related acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). He was then initiated on induction chemotherapy for AML in January 2016 i.e. cytarabine and doxorubicin. After receiving chemotherapy and overcoming neutropenic sepsis, BMAT results still revealed residual disease and he was thus initiated on further chemotherapy (salvage HIDAC regimen) on 4/4/2016.

The BMAT post salvage HIDAC revealed that he achieved a complete response. It was decided that further consolidation would still be given to Gauguin Kleynhans.

He has no siblings, and an absent father. Funds needs to be raised to assist in a matched unrelated donor search, with a view of a possible allogeneic SCT. Matches in South Africa could not be found and four possible matches were found in Europe. Gauguin was on his father’s medical aid and he cancelled it. Gauguin cannot afford a medical aid and the medical aid will exclude cancer for 12 months if Gauguin joins a medical aid now. A hospital plan is the best option.

Gauguin needs urgent treatment to be able to heal completely.

Thank you for your assistance and help.
