HELP FREE A HOWLER

Amazon Shelter is a centre for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild animals that have suffered from human activity like logging, mining, habitat destruction and the illegal wildlife trade.

We are one of the only animal rescue centres in Peru that actually release our animals into the wild, in protected forest where they can thrive.

This year we want to release 14 Howler monkeys. Over the years we have specialised in rehabilitating Howlers and we have performed a number of successful releases in the past.

This year’s release is especially important as we have a number of Howler groups that have given birth to young at the centre who now have a chance to live a completely wild and natural life.

This is the work that we strive for year round, through the rainy season, with or without volunteers - we work 24/7 and 365 days a year to make this happen.

It is wonderful to see our Howlers free and flourishing in the forest, BUT… The process of releasing is expensive. The government require a number of rigorous health checks on the animals, which we have to pay for ourselves. We need to rent transport to take the animals to the release site and we need food and accommodation for our team to release and monitor the animals to make sure they are transitioning properly into the wild.

When you put all of the costs together, our budget to release this group comes to $5000. Which works out just over $350 per animal. It sounds a lot, but when you think that each animal will now get to live a free and wild life, away from danger. That, we feel, is a small price to pay.
