Flash floods and landslides that occurred in Jayapura, Papua, claimed dozens of lives. In addition, the disaster caused damaged buildings and homes.

BNPB Head of Information and Public Relations Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho suspects that the flash floods that occurred in Sentani were caused by damage to the Cycloop Mountains in Jayapura. Mountains that are supposed to be water catchments are even damaged and made into settlements to agriculture.

Damage in the Cycloop Mountains has been going on since 2003. Encroachment of nature reserves by 43,030 people or 753 families since 2003. There are residential land uses and mixed dryland agriculture in the DTA (DAS Sentani) flood of 2,415 hectares," said the Head of Public Relations and Information BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho at Graha BNPB, Jakarta, Monday (03/18/2019).

The following are data on victims of floods and landslides submitted by BNPB on Tuesday (3/19/2019) afternoon:

1. 89 people were killed and 159 people injured

BNPB recorded 89 people died as a result of flooding in Sentani, Jayapura, Papua. In addition, 150 people were injured.

"As many as 159 people were injured, 84 people were seriously injured and 75 were lightly injured," said Head of BNPB's Data Information and Public Relations Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Of the 89 people, the Emergency Response Main Post recorded 82 deaths due to flash floods in Jayapura Regency. While 7 deaths due to landslides in Ampera, Jayapura City.

2. 74 Missing People

BNPB said there were 74 people missing in accordance with reports from families and communities. Dozens of missing people consisted of 34 from Milinik Village, 20 from BTN Gajah Mada, 7 from Inauli Housing Complex, 4 from Bambar Village, 2 from BTN Bintang Timur, 1 from Social, 1 from Komba, and 3 from Social Cadets.

In addition, 350 houses, 3 bridges, 8 drainage units, 4 roads, 2 churches, 1 mosque, 8 schools, 104 shop houses, and 1 market unit were severely damaged.

3. Thousands of Personnel Deployed to Help Flash Flood Emergency Management in Sentani

BNPB reported that 1,613 joint team personnel from 23 various agencies and institutions were still handling the banjir bandang disaster emergency. The number of victims continues to increase given the vast area affected by the disaster.

Public kitchens, health service posts and posts have been established. However, some urgent needs are still needed, such as toilets, clean water, food, mattresses, blankets, decent clothing, generators, kitchen appliances, and psychosocial.

4. Number of Refugees Increases

Many people choose to live in refugee camps because of trauma and fear of a subsequent flash flood. As a result, at some points the refugees crowded with refugees.

There were 6,831 refugees recorded in 15 refugee points. Refugees still need help with basic needs. The distribution of 6,831 refugees is:

1. BTN Bintang Timur: 600 people.

2. BTN Gajah Mada: 1,450 people.

3. Doyo Baru: 203 people.

4. Nursing home: 23 people.

5. HIS Agus Karitji: 600 people.

6. Siil: 1,000 people.

7. Gunung Merah (Main Post): 1,391 people.

8. Himles hostel: 50 people.

9. Company D: 108 people.

10. Hawaiian Puspenka: 123 people.

11. Abdi Nusantara Foundation: 900 people.

12. Kampung Netar: 43 people.

13. Permata Hijau: 120 people.

14. Nursing Home: 23 people.

15. Rindam: 220 people.
