My father, Ferdie, met an accident at work, 9 years ago from which damaged his lumbar causing disability to walk.

Sadly, he wasn't aided continuously with the medical attention and rehabilitation back then due to the type of employment he had and the best thing he ever got was a pair of crutches and a spinal bracing just to support the affected part. Such abandonment and lack of accountability of employers continue to this day leaving people, like my father, to suffer work related injuries incapacitating them, leaving them jobless and penniless.

Despite the hardships that is the tragedy and the following months filled with his agony, Ferdie received strength and moral support from his family and loving friends. For a short period of time he was hopeless but his strong spirit and fate lead him to be positive again.

Ferdie continued to spend his days at home where he'll find small ways to earn income such as cooking meals and snacks to sell in the neighborhood. He joined a number direct selling groups to sell home essentials to any one he knows and finally deciding to rent a small place to build a sari-sari store. He falsely believed his condition has gotten better when he managed to stop using his crutches altogether and settled using a second-hand quad based cane from his father. As life gets tougher each day, these small gigs didn't manage to cover the family's daily expenditures so at the age of 48, 4 years after the tragedy, he enrolled himself to a free communication and basic computer course and managed to land a job with an out sourcing company.

Among the perks of his employment is availing free doctor visits care of their company's health insurance. Sadly, upon consulting a doctor, it appeared that his condition has actually gotten worse. Numerous rehabilitative therapies (therapies on 2013, 2015 and 2017) have been tried just to assess the functionality of his spine and how it reacts to strenuous activities but all resulted to recommendation for a spine surgery.

In the Philippines, health insurances don't cover expenses related to pre-exisiting conditions. The most recent consultation the my father did was with a public hospital where they approximately gave a price of P300,000 (professional fees already waived) due to the quantity of pedicle screws and rods required to stabilize the spine (he needs 12 of this and each approximately costs 25k to 30k). This quote doesn't include room fees, anesthesia, blood bags for transfusion and recovery related costs. We are currently tapping onto different government offices to seek financial aid but the processes required by those institution have taken up much of my father's time and have been stressing his body more yet what was procurred still was not enough to cover half of the costs. His surgery is scheduled on the 18th of May 2017 as postponement may lead to worsening of his condition.

We humbly ask for you support with any amount you may donate and by spreading the world and hopefully it finds its way to reach out through other kind hearted ones who are willing to shell out. The funds raised will be used to keep him financially stable through the difficult times ahead, and to support his hopes and dreams of a spine pain free and quad-based cane free future, running and playing with his beloved grand children.
