What is the situation?
1,000s of southeast asian workers on Koh Phangan are in dire need of your help.
Koh Phangan is an island off the west coast of Thailand, with an estimated five thousand Burmese workers, over thirty thousand Thai and a large foreign population.
Most workers are reliant on international tourism, and because of the coronavirus pandemic, thousands have been laid off.
The majority are guest workers from Myanmar and Laos who have sent their pay back home and are ineligible for government assistance.
Due to strict border lockdowns, many are now trapped in Thailand with no income, no food, and in some cases, no homes.
What are you doing?
Our project's aim is simple: to feed displaced Burmese people in need, as well as Thais and foreigners without means of sustenance, for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.
The local community, both Thai and Foreign are organizing the distribution of rice, to try and provide the basic calories for survival over the coming months.
How can I help?
Your donations enable us to deliver the constant supply of rice to those who are going hungry right now.
The cost of rice for 1 day for a person is just ฿12 ($0.37 USD).
1 week: ฿84 ($2.59).
1 month: ฿360 ($11.10)
3 months: ฿1080 ($33.44)
Some have been giving between ฿3,000 - ฿10,000 ($150-$300), which would sponsor 4-10 people's rice for 3 months. That's between 2,500 - 8,000 portions of rice.
With over 3,000 people who need access to food, all we need is 3,000 people who sponsor 1 person for the next 3 months :)
Our current goal is to raise 3.5 million baht, to ensure all 3,000 people can have at least basic rice for 3 months.
If we get more donations coming in, we can move back to fully nutritious meals.
But right now we need to ensure people will have at least enough to survive in the coming 3 months.
100% of your donations will go to basic food for those who are in a desperate situation.
If you have ever visited Koh Phangan, you will have benefited from the tireless work of these dedicated cooks, cleaners, and service staff, along with the infrastructure they build and maintain.
Now is your chance to help the people who’ve helped us so much. That way our community will be intact to welcome you when next you return.
Any funds left over after this crisis abates will be donated to Koh Phangan’s state hospital.
This excellent hospital provides care at a minimum of cost, and is currently subsidized yearly by charitable donations totaling eight million baht from the local Thai population.
Every penny helps.
No donation is too small to make a big impact on someone’s life right now.
Thank you!
P.S. If anyone has problems with payment, please message Alex or Olé through the Happy Food Facebook page: https://web.facebook.com/HappyFoodKPG.
We can assist and give alternate methods such as direct bank transfer or Transferwise.
P.P.S. We’ve found that a simple post on your Facebook wall can literally bring in up to 750 meals in donations. If you’re up for sharing a post on your wall, contact us via the FB page and we’ll make it super easy for you.
P.P.P.S Happy Food is 100% volunteer run. 100% of donations goes toward providing rice.
