Campaign Story
On 18th May 1991 Gary Bell was playing rugby for Mashonaland B in Zimbabwe when he sadly suffered a terrible neck injury which left him as a quadriplegic. His parents looked after him for a number of years and then they passed away in 2000 and 2002. His brothers both died in the 1990’s. A good Samaritan, Dennis Vrettos looked after Gary, by letting him stay rent free in his house and buying him groceries until his death in 2010, when a Trust was set up to help Gary. The Trust found a place for Gary to live which is the Old Lions Club Hall which is owned by Round Table Harare 1 and they charge Gary a minimal rent. Another philanthropist, Paul Georgiou, gave Gary a job at Solution Centre which helps towards his expenses and contributes to his medical aid. Lately he has not been able to go to work every day because he gets terrible bedsores. We are sure that you can appreciate his expenses are quite substantial with the fact that he needs two helpers twenty-four hours a day to feed him, bath him and turn him, a maid to do the cooking, fuel for the generator and he has fairly hefty monthly medical bills.
The latest news is that Gary had to be hospitalised on 17th of September 2019 due to a serious bladder infection which has led to the doctor discovering several cysts on his only remaining kidney. The Trust relies on donations from well-wishers and as you can imagine during these hard times in Zimbabwe, these have dwindled substantially so we appealing for funds to cover Gary’s medical expenses. Gary has also had a “mass” removed from his back which has gone to the labs for testing. Gary will need the services of Zimbabwe’s top Urologist to perform the surgery as well as funds to cover the shortfalls from his stay in hospital. This is all going to cost money that Gary and The Gary Bell Trust does not have so we are appealing desperately for any help that you are willing to give. Any small amount will help towards these medical bills that will save Gary’s life. Gary has lived for 28 years as a quadriplegic from a rugby accident and so we need anyone's help to give him quality of life and decent medical care during this time of need.
