My name is Eury German and with your help I will be attending New York University Tisch School of the Arts in the Fall to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts in Dance.
I began dancing when I got to Wesleyan University in the fall of 2012. Prior to Wesleyan, I had no formal dance training. My senior year of high school I quickly fell in love with dancing in my kitchen and enrolled in dance classes as soon as I got to Wesleyan. With the love and support of my friends and family, I have worked incredibly hard over the last four years by taking as many dance classes as possible, spending my summers at dance intensives, and pushing my limits to reach a caliber of expertise required for admission to Tisch.
Tuition alone is just over $55,000 a year. The Tisch dance department has given me $40,000 a year in merit-based scholarships (financial aid is not available to graduate students) and I am able to do work study for another $3,000 a year. This leaves me with a daunting $12,000 gap. I have committed to Tisch because I understand and recognize the invaluable education and training I will receive from this experience, but without financial assistance I will not be able to attend. Coming this close to fulfilling my dreams is exciting, but I am still unable to pay without assistance.
I just graduated with a degree in Dance and Biology from Wesleyan University. I wrote a thesis in Dance and recieved Honors. (I have attached the video link here.)
I was on full scholarship at Wesleyan. My parents were not required to pay a parent contribution because my mother is a single parent with an income below the poverty line. I am not in contact with my father. I don't have the economic or social capital to afford higher education without similar financial aid at NYU.
The cost of housing and meals at Wesleyan was included in the tuition and therefore covered by financial aid. I would only be able to afford tuition alone at NYU if I took out a loan (which would pose its own substantial financial burden). I will have a job on-campus through work study and a weekend job that I hope will be able to cover housing and meals. Working full time is not only prohibited by the university, but also detracts from my educational experience. I worry that my primary focus will not be on my artistry and education if I cannot raise the money to relieve the burden of tuition.
New York University Tisch School of the Arts has arguably the best program in Dance performance in the country. While at Tisch I will continue to work on my artistry under world-class faculty and will be exposed to an incredible amount of opportunities previously unavailable to me. Attending Tisch is my dream.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any assistance or guidance you are able to offer. Any amount, small or large, makes a huge difference in my life. Thank you for your continued faith in my artistry.
