Books offer the chance for people to learn, imagine new possibilities and shape their own futures.

Hi.

My name is Ahuose Ehikhamenor and I started a project called “Books and the World Beyond”. I am a Nigerian who currently resides in Poland.

This project was created to provide children with access to books and develop an appetite for reading in children between the ages of 9 – 17 who live in districts with very poor literacy levels.

As an avid reader myself, I hope to encourage independent reading and to promote literacy by providing inspiring book collections to children of low-income families through their school libraries.

The only access these children have to books is from their schools as buying of books is never on the priority list of families with limited budget. Unfortunately, their school libraries are greatly underfunded.

According to the United Nation’s Human Development Reports for 2018, Nigeria has a lower than expected level of educational achievement given its moderately high per capita income. In terms of Human Development Index, Nigeria currently ranks as the 157th out of 189 countries. Illiteracy rates are high and there are big gaps in achievement between the rich and poor in different regions. The initiative has a strong emphasis and commitment to the Nigerian education improvement process by enhancing literacy.

The goal is to donate 120 new books ranging from all genres and appropriate reading difficulty levels to two schools in Nigeria. The schools selected (one in Oyo state and the other in Edo state) officially have libraries but due to lack of proper funding have been unable to buy new books for their students for many years making the libraries unattractive to the students.

The amount requested will cover the costs of 240 books (120 books each), shipping costs and Gogetfunding fees. Any extra money gotten will be used to purchase even more books either for the initial 2 schools or even a third school.

I am currently working on the service page of the website www.nathaliacrescent.com where the donations made to the schools will be shared.

No amount is too small. I will greatly appreciate it if you help spread the word by sharing this link.

Thank you
