Our IWO (Indian Women's Organization) activists found a remarkably effective way to stop the rape and murders of women and young girls and build a society that respects women in India. The lives of Indian women are being changed by our organization's activities.

The story of Thungathurthi Village:

Help Empowering Women to Stop Rapes in India!, https://goget.fund/2xynao7

Thungathurthi is a large village in the Nalgonda district, Telangana State of India. Thungathurthi has a population of 8379 inhabitants of which 3727 are male and 4652 are female, according to the 2011 census. Women and young girls were suffering from gender related crime intensely there. The fear of having to pay dowry as well as the threat of sexual violence is commonplace.

Our IWO activists went to the village and created an IWO committee with 25 executive members. IWO chief leaders called all of the village women and young girls for a meeting at the government school ground one day, and informed them about laws which protect women and dowry prohibition acts. They called on women to unite under the IWO village committee.

IWO activists taught the women how to protect themselves from rapists and murderers and how to find and take legal support. The activists also told women and young girls not to go to pedhamanusulu or take a settlement from them, and that the IWO committee offers support (not just in words!) for women considering abortion due to the fear of dowry.

“Pedhamanusulu” refers to wealthier men who attempt to settle criminal charges with the victim without the case going to trial. Rapist criminals and murderers have escaped from prison and women protesting against the legal system receive bigger fines than men, which only further encourages crime.

One day, a man named Ravi raped a 19-year-old girl called Rani. Afterwards the pedhamanusulu called the victim's parents for a meeting but the victim’s parents avoided their call. The pedhamanusulu was angry with the girl’s parents, but the parents asked IWO activists for help. IWO activists filed a complaint with the police with a good witness. The police arrested the rapist Ravi and the village women and girls took courage from that incident.

Naturally, women and girls are happier and feel more empowered. They raised an IWO white flag which symbolizes liberty for Indian women and a peaceful life. Women in Thungathurthi now ask for IWO activists support every time they have a problem.

My Name is Lalitha Sampathi and I Am General Secretary at the Indian Women's Organization (IWO). It is a non-profit women's organization. I and my team members are working to stop violence against women, specifically the rape and murders of women and Indian daughters. We travel in 10 Indian districts, raising awareness for social change. I am motivating women from rural areas, town and cities across India in order to get more women involved in IWO committees. My IWO work brings a positive contribution to Indian communities, making a difference in many women's lives.

Indian women are currently suffering from different forms of violence and subjugation. Pregnant Indian women are killing female babies after giving birth due to the fear of having to pay a large dowry when the girl grows up and marries. Indian criminals continue to brutally rape and kill women and Indian Daughters. Today, 465 million Indian women live in fear. Please Support us.

How do we stop rapes in India?

A major part of the problem is that Indian women and young girls are not aware of the Indian Constitution’s fundamental rights, laws and acts protecting women. IWO activists first build an IWO local committee. They teach women and young girls about the Indian constitution’s fundamental rights and how to take legal action. So far many rapists and murderers have been arrested by police thanks to IWO activities.

IWO chief leaders have monthly meetings with all IWO committee members and volunteers. In these meetings women discuss how to solve different problems. Leaflets are always printed in local languages.

When women or young girls are raped by criminals, IWO activists organize a social awareness rally with masses of women in the streets and demand police action and criminals detention.

Public outcry and awareness rallies have made a huge difference by exposing people to the issue who may not be aware and an awakened cultural climate eventually arises in which crimes against women are stopped before they can happen, And the rape crime are stopping by IWO activities. https://vimeo.com/252603137 .

The IWO has a white flag as a symbol. Indian women want peace, humanity, and a safe life. The white flag has a symbol of women’s unity, showing the commitment of women to help each other worldwide. These flags are used at IWO meetings and awareness rallies, and are a powerful symbol of hope for these brave women. They also help IWO spread awareness and build our movement.

IWO teachers operate evening schools for illiterate women and girls in their local languages and English. Teachers also explain national and international perspectives on the suffering of women, safety measures, legal assistance, and dowry-motivated abortion. The teachers are role models who inspire Indian women to live with respect, empowerment, and safety. These funds will go toward study and teaching materials.
