My name is Elvie Portarcos. I am 34 years old and I have stage 4-breast cancer. I am setting up this funding page because my finances are dwindling and I am in dire need of help with my medications and treatments.
After ten years of marriage, my husband and I decided it was time to start a family. We were both healthy and felt confident we could start our new chapter in our married life when in October of 2015; I felt a lump in my breast. Secretly, I had myself checked at the East Avenue Medical Center to confirm my suspicions. By November, it was clear that our plans to have a baby would have to be put on hold because the result of my November 22 biopsy revealed that I had Stage 2 INVASIVE DUCTAL CARCINOMA – the most common form of breast cancer.
In December of the same year, I decided to go for a second opinion at the country’s largest charitable institution – The Philippine General Hospital. Unfortunately though, the result was still the same. In January of 2016, I underwent a major operation – lumpectomy but the following month, after a CT scan, it was revealed that I had suspicious nodules in my lungs elevating my cancer to Stage 4.
In March of 2016, I started my chemotherapy treatments, which was to last 8 cycles. In September of that year I finished my chemotherapy sessions but was advised to take medications such as Tamoxifen to block estrogen receptor tumors. I am supposed to take this medication for ten years since stage 4 cancer is not curable and it’s my best option to remain stable and have a quality life.
Just recently, I went for my yearly monitoring. The doctors saw a progression in my lungs and a development of mass in my breast. I needed to repeat the treatments I did back in 2016. The only problem is that since I have been having treatments at a charitable institution which offers some relief for tests and treatments at a minimal cost, this time around – I had to undergo treatments only offered at private hospitals which costs a lot of money.
I work as an employee for a market research company and my husband is also an employee. Until this day, I continue to show up for work to keep up with a normal life for as long as I can and to at least make some money to shoulder the cost of my illness but I am feeling the weight and as much as I’d like to do this on my own and exhaust all efforts using our own funds – sadly it will never be enough.
Private consultations, CT guided biopsies and the possibility of undergoing another round of chemotherapy sessions as well as operations isn’t something my husband and I can shoulder. My employer has so kindly offered to help out in any way they can but I am bracing myself for the astronomical cost of this endeavor so I am knocking on your good hearts to help me raise the funds I will be needing to undergo these tests and treatments. Please help me by making a small donation or share my story through your social media platforms so I may continue to live a quality life. Your contribution will help us out a great deal. I understand that money is tight this holiday season but if you can spare any amount for my treatment plan, it will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance and may God bless you.
