Meet Dusty:

Dusty is a SEVERELY malnourished stray who was INTENTIONALLY hit by a speeding car.

Locals in the area claim that some vehicles actually race to hit strays!!!!! There's his bone (right photo, above) popping out of his leg. He's been aimlessly limping around the streets for 4 days (!!!!!)

Good thing he was nearby and I got a hold of him with the help of other rescuers. We rushed him to Pendragon Veterinary Clinic. I know they are capable of performing a range of tests and they have a good success rate in surgical procedures. And I knew Dusty needed that. Plus they were open despite the lock-down.

So, there we learned his oxygen levels were low (70, normal is 90), has fever (41°), tested positive for Ehrlichia (bacteria), suspected to have Distemper (viral disease, to be confirmed after 4 days), and he has a totally broken knee cap and hipbone:

Since his knee cap and ligament is completely torn off, even if the wound closes, his left leg won't allow him to walk anymore. So the vet explained that the broken leg and hip bone need to be amputated since if it's left the way it is, the bones would put pressure on other bones and could cause swelling and pain in the long-run.

And since he's really skinny to undergo surgery, he's now under close watch and confined in an isolated ward for his: (1) Ehrlichia treatment, (2) tests to confirm the possibility of Distemper, (3) pain management, and (4) fluid therapy. He will have to regain all his strength, get hydrated, be cleared of illnesses before he is approved for surgery.

Here he is when he was brought in -- he looked really tired and it seemed like this was his first real rest. He was easily trusting, surprisingly, despite the pain he's going through.

We'll be keeping him confined for days until he gets treated out of critical condition. Good news is his heart, kidneys, and liver are all OK. And we hope we get him healthy so he could be surgery-ready!
To get to that stage, Dusty and I need your help! We would be very grateful for donations. This would be used for:
  • vet emergency charges
  • his daily isolated confinement space (not certain until when)
  • his IV fluids including his medications (mix of different antibiotics, pain medications) and vitamins;
  • completed and pending lab tests, completed x-rays, and consultations
  • food
  • surgery (quoted minimum of PHP 30,000)

I will publish donations received and expenses incurred for transparency. I will also update this campaign each time news comes on Dusty's condition.
