Help Denys Fight anti-NMDA receptor Encephalytis

Denys was born a healthy baby; his development was akin to his peers, he took his first steps, he said his first words. The onset of the illness was sudden and its effects devastating; at just 12 months old, Denys became acquainted with intensive care units, grew fearful of bright lights and loud noises and suffered from loss of consciousness and vision impairments. These are just a few horrific symptoms of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

Denys fell into a 3-day coma, after which he stopped being able to sit, hold up his head and stopped recognising his family. The Taran family raised enough funds to get a diagnosis at a clinic in Germany because Ukrainian doctors were stumped. The doctors Vestische Kinder-und Jugendklinik were able to establish his true diagnosis – anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis – which, without treatment, can bring about extremely distressing symptoms (seizures, movement disorders, speech dysfunction, hypoventilation amongst others) and may eventually be fatal. Recovery is long and difficult, however, the prognosis is very positive if appropriate treatment is given.

Considering the fact that Ukrainian doctors were unable to diagnose Denys, they obviously do not have the knowledge or experience of treating this rare and debilitating condition. Denys needs at least 90 days of treatment at the Helios hospital in Germany. He will be closely monitored and administered immunosuppressants as well as various other medications.

The preliminary bill is 45,500 EUR. The Taran family are unable to provide such funds; which is why they need our help.
