Hi, I am Dayna and I have IMHA (Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anemia).
This means my immune system is attacking my own red blood cells causing me to be anemic. My condition has been kept relatively well under control with medication and regular vet visits to ensure my blood count is maintained at a reasonable level. That is until a recent episode in Aug'19. I was very lethargic & not eating and was rushed to A&E at Mount Pleasant. I had to do a blood transfusion due to very low blood count and had to be hospitalised for 12 days. Because I was also found to have autoaglutination & spherocytes, both a result of my IMHA. It was difficult to stabalise my condition as my blood count continued to stay on the low end and I continued to feel lethargic. The vet had to recommend the use of IVIG, which is an expensive treatment, but luckily I started feeling better after that. I also started taking leflunomide, a medication I will need to take for the rest of my life which cost me ~$10/day. I was finally discharged after my blood count managed to msintain at a reasonable level but I have to return weekly for checkup. The hospitalization bill came up to SGD 8,773.
I thought I could slowly stabalize at home but complications came again on 15 Oct'19. My hind leg started to swell & over a day it became so bad that I wasn't able to stand properly. I was once again sent to the vet for treatment & found out I needed another blood transfusion. This time due to complications from my severely inflammed leg, my white blood cells dropped dangerously low. I ended up being hospitalised for another 7 days. While I was taking antibiotics to help fight off the leg infection, we had to cut down the immunosuppressive meds I have been taking as it stuns my healing process. This probably triggered my red blood count to dip again & I had to do a 2nd blood transfussion 4 days later. It is such a delicate & challenging process to manage my IMHA with other complications and every blood transfusion I get is a time extension for me to see if the meds will finally work. This time the bill came up to SGD 4,730.
Now, the hair on my leg & chunks of my skin have already fallen off. We feared the worst that I might eventually lose my leg but I remained hopeful. The skin under my armpits is also starting to get inflammed and oozing pus. This will be a long, long process for me: I need very regular vet visits, I am on long term medications, the wound on my leg needs cleaning twice a day, which means I need alot of consumables like Allevyn Gentle Dressing, bandages, gauzes, latex gloves, sodium chloride solution & intrasite gel etc.
But I am not giving up and will continue to fight my battle with IMHA, and I would need your help. I'm raising money to cover my current bills, as I do not want to become a financial burden to anyone else. Please help me on my journey as I am only 6 years old and would love if I could stay with my mummy a little longer. She is my world.
Hi, I am Karen and Dayna is my family. I always believe that Dayna should only be my responsibility & burden to bear since I adopted her 5 years ago. She's had a long medical history: environmental allergies, kidney problems and now IMHA. The latest hospitalisation bills have taken a toll on us which is why I'm humbly seeking assistance. Any amount would really go a long way for us but if you are unable to help financially, pls keep Dayna in your thoughts & prayers. We will be eternally grateful!
Lots of Love & Licks from Dayna & Karen
