Campaign Story
Daniel Owino is a 33 year old Kenyan. He lives
in the Western part of Kenya in Bondo Sub County in a village called
Usenge on the shores of Lake Victoria.
He has a wife and a young
family of three Children. Daniel does not have any formal education and
has been working as an unskilled laborer in a fish buying company to
feed his family. He bought a motorbike from his savings and has been
working as a motorbike rider, earning enough to feed his family. A year
ago Daniel was admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral
Hospital (
https://www.jaramogireferral.go.ke/) with severe anemia after he was referred from his local hospital called Got Agulu Dispensary.
He
was given blood transfusion, treated for anemia and discharged. About a
month ago the severe anemia re-occurred and he was once again admitted
at the same regional hospital for three weeks. He was again transfused
with more blood, the anemia managed and referred for a test called
gastrointestinal endoscopy. Daniel did the test which is basically a
procedure that allows the doctor to look at the inside lining of the
esophagus, stomach and small intestines to establish the reason for loss
of blood. The test shows that he has enlarged blood vessels (varices)
in the food pipe (oesophagus). The enlarged blood vessels are bleeding
and that’s why he frequently vomits blood and passes black stool. He
needs a procedure to tie the blood vessels (banding). It's like tying a
rubber band around the blood vessels to prevent them from bleeding. If
the rubber bands are not applied, they could easily rapture and he
could deteriorate as a result of blood loss very quickly.
The
blood vessels are enlarged because of a problem in the liver and the
Doctor recommended an ultrasound to look at the liver. Liver problems
are common in people who drink, Daniel doesn’t, and hence the Doctors
recommended that he is seen by a gastroenterologist.
Daniel does
not have any source of income, he hired out his motorbike to a friend
but the motorbike was involved in a road accident recently and is
currently being detained at the local police station. He has so far been
relying on relatives and friends for fundraising for his treatment.
These group of people are becoming fatigued.
Because the Varices
can rapture without notice he needs to urgently have the banding done to
his varices. To do this he needs 200USD. He also needs to have an
ultra sound to check the liver as well as to raise money to pay
consultation for a physician and gastroenterologist. These will cost
about 200USD inclusive of transport costs to the hospital. Because his
treatment may take long, he also needs to be enrolled in the National
Hospital Insurance Fund to cater for his future treatment. This will
cost about 100USD.
On his behalf i am requesting that we support him to get back to his feet and raise his family.
Help spread the word!
