My name is Dani Adduono. I am a 23 year old student residing in Ontario, Canada. I currently hold a Specialized Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and am completing my Masters of Science degree in Psychological Science. I hope to continue my education in psychology within a medical school setting to eventually become a psychiatrist.
I am excited to announce that I have the incredible opportunity to utilize the knowledge and skills I have learned throughout my education to help those in need. I have been accepted to volunteer for a mental health program in the country of Sri Lanka, whose mental health needs and suicide rates continue to drastically increase. In particular, it is estimated that a significant percentage of individuals living in Tsunami-affected areas are suffering from a mental illness, many of which are living with a severe mental disorder. Unfortunately, traditional mental health developments have failed to meet the growing needs of this country.
I have the opportunity to work along side mental health physicians in the Galle district, which is one of the worst affected areas currently within the country. I will also be aiding in various therapies to help both adult and child populations.
This opportunity provides the chance to learn about the cultural differences and stigma regarding mental health in Sri Lanka, and hopefully I will be able to provide some insight from what I have learned. I hope to also bring some knowledge back home and integrate this into my hopeful future career as a mental health professional.
I am in need of funds to make this amazing opportunity possible. All donations are greatly appreciated, and I thank and cherish everyone from the bottom of my heart.
