The Nashipay pre and primary School in remote Makuyuni, outside of Arusha in Tanzania, has been making education available to primary aged students in the local community with the educational needs for young girls as priority since 2013. The school began under a shady tree, to where it is today with a number of school buildings including a dormitory and a current enrollment of 360 students.

Our mission is to o offer affordable and accessible education that is bicultural, for children living in the local Maasai communities, by preparing them for life in a modern Tanzania while remaining rooted in their Maasai culture.

Functioning as an NGO, our vision is to create the necessary infrastructure, processes and conditions for the school to become self-sustainable and allow it to expand to a full capacity of 400 children enrolled through Preschool to grade 7 by 2030.

It currently costs just $360 dollars to send one child to school for an ENTIRE school year, including their daily meals and boarding! Your donation will go towards the child's school supplies, teacher and staff wages, classroom needs, and daily food such as corn, beans and rice. Anything you are able to contribute is invaluable to their education, nutrition and future! You are making a huge difference in these children's lives.

The Maasai have a very rich culture that emphasizes working with the land, herding cattle and sharing resources among the community. Therefore, as young Maasai grow up, they are encouraged to honor the way of their elders by dedicating themselves to these traditions and customs, sometimes at the cost of seeking other opportunities - such as education. Nashipay Pre and Primary school believes that education is the gateway to change, and it is dedicated to providing quality and accessible education to the local Maasai community while preserving their culture.

Pursuing this mission does not come without some challenges. Most of the surrounding communities currently live below the Maasai poverty line, and struggle to afford any type of education. On top of this, for the past three years, the Maasai community in Makuyuni has faced an extremely drastic drought. Since the nature of pastoralist livelihood is centered on livestock and its products (i.e milk, meat and hides), this drought has put most families in desperate need of food and resulted in a lot of kids getting their only daily meals from school.

Inspired by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal’s 2 and 4 (zero hunger, quality education), Nashipay Pre and Primary School welcomes the responsibility to provide both the right education and the right nutrition for a healthy life for all of its students.

*Nashipay Pre and primary School is accredited by the MINISTRY OF EDUCATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF TANZANIA. The school is located within Makuyuni Ward, Monduli District, Arusha Region Tanzania. The school is fully registered under the Education Act no 23 1978 Cap 26(3) as an English Medium school and given the registration number EM. 17643 2*
