Help children from Rusingan to have access to food and education

Today, after an invasion of cricket and the Coronavirus which is starting to spread in Kenya, the children of Rusinga need your help more than ever. It is urgent for Victor to collect funds in order to get food to feed its students.

I will volunteer this summer at the Milman Iattract Academy in Kenya, a school that did not only provide an education to children but also food and environmental values.

Today the school need help and donation in order to maintain its infrastructure, provide teachers with a fair salary but more urgently to give to children at least one meal/day.

The school regroups around 150 children from the poorest families of Rusinga Island, Kenya and for some of them, the only ration of food of the day is providing by the school. Victor try to give to each children a breakfast as well as maize and beans for lunch.

Brief overview about the history of the school and its missions:

The late Michael Odula and his wife Jane created the Milman Iattract Academy in 2005 in order to provide the poorest children of Kenya all they need to get a good education, including clean water, food, clothes, protection, and shelter. In the year 2018, Michael suffered stroke and because of his unstable health he handed over the management of the school to his son Victor.

With the help of the Workaway volunteers who come to help in the school, Victor has transformed the school and gave it a new face. He created the "Green School Program". This program support "Nursery Tree" and his students has the task to plant and learn to maintain the fruit trees. This has an enormously positive effect on the topsoil, which provides other plants with more nutrition and supporting likewise wildlife with food and shelter. They are thus sensitise on topics such as the protection of their environment and deforestation. For Victor “Young people should play an active role in the protection of the environment in self-help groups to ensure that they have a secure future”.

However, Victor faces issues concerning the costs of infrastructure and food. Sometimes the school is running only by Victor as volunteers are missing and he has to look for his own resources to have the kids eat. Furthermore, with the cricket invasion in Kenya and the coronavirus, food is going out of stock and some shops close their doors, letting Victor without limited options to find food.

Also, the school had to switch from iron sheet walls, considered as dangerous for the children by the Ministry of Education, to cement ones. Previous volunteers procured and built three cement walls for the Milman Iattract Academy, but still FIVE walls more are needed to keep the school from being closed by the government.

But today the emergency stay the access to food for children, and any support in this direction could help save children life. Please help funding the noble cause of Victor Odula to provide children with food, water, clothes and shelter.
