I am Charis Kay Peralta, a fourth year medical student. I am a candidate for graduation this coming December 22, 2020. I truly believe with all my heart that my life's God-given purpose is to become a doctor. I am committed on spending a lifetime of helping people who are in-need of medical attention. I am only few steps away from serving this purpose.
My dedication towards my studies comes from my desire to help others who also have the same financial struggles as my family. Currently, our small tailoring shop at home is our only source of income and it's barely enough to provide for our daily needs and monthly dues. Moreso, it was never enough to support the financial requirements for my studies. This had been our family’s struggle since I was young. During my college years, I opted to be a working student wherein I had a part time job every weekend to earn additional income. Then for the rest of the week, I would strive to excel academically to maintain a full scholarship. By God’s grace, I graduated as Magna Cum Laude with a degree of BS Biology. This became my stepping stone as I aspire to study in a medical school.
It has been my lifelong dream to become the first doctor in our family. If I will only look at our financial capability, my ambition may seem unattainable. But I have shifted my focus unto God and He unceasingly fills me with hope, knowing that with God, all things are possible. I was given an entrance scholarship in FEU-NRMF because of the academic honor that I have achieved in college. Subsequently, I was grateful to be a beneficiary of Alumni scholarship. Yet, there was an instance when our financial resources were very limited that it can no longer sustain my daily allowance and monthly dorm rental fees so I also had to file for Leave of Absence for a year. During that time, I worked as a high school teacher and saved money that could somehow support my daily expenses when I return to school. After a year of teaching, I was blessed again to be chosen as a recipient of Alumni scholarship. As a scholar, I am fully aware that I have to maintain a good academic record as a sign of gratitude to my sponsors and parents who are supporting me. Even when I returned to school, it was still a tough time for my family since we had to devote most of our family's resources and even loan money in order to pay for my tuition fee. There were times when I was asked to leave the dormitory where I stay because we were not able to pay the monthly rental fee. I have tried to help our business, in my own simple way, by approaching my friends and schoolmates to sell jackets, jerseys, and uniforms to them. Also, I was able to settle the balance in my tuition fee through the help of people who have generously given donations.
Through these hardships, my parents and I have persevered and remained hopeful because we know that if I will become a doctor, these will all be worth it. I had to stay focused and more eager to attain my goal. With the pandemic that we are all facing right now, there is shortage of healthcare professionals that would cater for the medical needs of my countrymen. This is one of the main reasons why I have this burning desire to help several Filipinos who needs medical assistance. I understand the risks as well as physical and mental exhaustion that Doctors are facing right now. Their heroic deeds inspire me to to emulate their bravery and commitment.
I aspire to be one of the medical frontliners and serve the people. But lacking in financial resources is something that is beyond my control. Having been into this precarious situation, I am humbly asking for financial assistance that you could extend for my studies. I could only ask until October for the extension of the settlement of my tuition fee which is still P 120,726.25. I am committed to finish my medical studies and become a compassionate and competent physician. I hope and pray for your generous support for the fulfillment of my dream of becoming a doctor.
