90km (56 miles) is a long way to run in a month, let alone in one day. But that's the distance of the Comrades Ultra Marathon, which I will be doing on 10th June between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, South Africa.

It's called the Ultimate Human Race. I am far from the Ultimate Human. As such this is going to be incredibly tough, both on the day and during the over a thousand kilometres of training I'm doing beforehand. Roughly 35% of those that start don't finish.

But your donation to the charity I have chosen can help me keep motivated to get up at 4am for training and to keep going on the day, especially at the point where I have just run one full marathon and realise I HAVE MORE THAN ANOTHER FULL MARATHON TO GO!

The cause is one I have become involved in helping and feel passionately about. Thembisa is a township between Johannesburg and Pretoria. It's not a wealthy place, to put it mildly, and many people have to fight so they and their families can survive. That's why Rebecca and Lerato Phathakge are so amazing. They are poor but they work every hour of every day to look after people they don't know. They take in the homeless, the destitute, orphans and the elderly, many of whom are very unwell, and they look after them, because no one else will. They get no state or charity funding. Unfortunately South Africa simply doesn't offer the funding or the safety nets of countries like the UK.

Rebecca was physically abused by her husband, and nearly died. After being saved by doctors, she felt she had a new purpose - to help others. On the way home from hospital she saw a lady who was homeless and invited her to stay at the family home. 20 years later, and she has taken in hundreds of different people in need of help.

Lerato, who is Rebecca's daughter, puts all the money she can earn into the care home and still comes home every night and feeds, washes and looks after the people in their care. She wants to study, go to university, but at the moment her whole life is dedicated to other people.

They need your help to do one specific thing - make their care home liveable. As they have taken on more and more people, they have built extra rooms onto their house to give them all shelter. But the building work has been done cheaply and they have no money to finish it. That's where you come in!

They urgently need a ceiling, a bath, a shower, some basins, rewired electricity, a hot water tank, safety barriers on the balcony, painting, tiling and much more.

The total cost is around £3000. I am working on getting funding from elsewhere as well but there is so little available. So anything you can give will allow us to do one more piece of the building puzzle. Every extra fix we can do makes the life of these women, and those they care for, a little bit easier. After 20 years of selflessly helping others, they deserve to have the care home in a state that is safe and works.

You can read more about Rebecca, Lerato and the care home here, in an article from the SA Sunday Times... http://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/sunday-times/20160904/281878707812758
