Help build Learning Classrooms for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Uriri District, Kenya

You are about to secure an opportunity to support poor marginalized rural Orphans and Vulnerable children in Kenya.

This fundraising cause targets to raise funds to support the construction and equipping of Wesleyan Children Learning and Care Centre located in Uriri District, West Kanyamkago Village, Migori County, Kenya to access education and attain social security.

The beneficiaries of this project are 5 year olds up to 15 years residential children previously abandoned, orphaned and other special need/ vulnerable in the community.

Wesleyan Children Education and Care Centre is an already established school in Got Uriri Village and operated through rented classrooms is in totally dilapidated state, destroyed by perennial rains and unhygienic state since the buildings are made of low quality materials (mud/ loose soil). The classrooms are in a sorry state and lack desks for the children to sit on. The floors of the classrooms are worn out, jiggers infested and the windows widely open exposing the entire classrooms to all sort hazards. The facility is not fenced and lacks proper security. Sanitation and hygiene is very poor hence pose a great challenge in terms of children health and hygiene. As the school enrollment increases day by day due to the high growing number of OVC’s seeking hand of support, the major the need to have big learning classrooms. There is no playing field where children can jump and play. Many children who are total orphans and have no one to care for them are facing danger of dropping out of the school to seek shelter on streets since the school lack a dormitory to act as their home. The major constraint for children, guardians and parents is that some parents are living in a vicious cycle of poverty and most children require full support ranging from education, physical and social support. This is not possible since many children have no parents to care for them and give them sound education. Children who have lost both parents due to HIV/ AIDS and other deaths are severely affected

RHD has taken the initiative to change the situation surrounding orphans and vulnerable children in South West Kanyamkago location to gain access to quality basic education and shelter. The organization task has been to mobilize resources for addressing challenges threatening the school (a community special school) from collapsing. Having managed to secure a piece of land to construct the school, the organization is now approaching well wishers and other like-minded organizations to join our fundraising cause in order to enable us build a new facility improve the condition of the school for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children who are currently enrolled or are seeking admission to join the school (Wesleyan Children Learning and Care Centre) from the nearby villages.

The funds realized from this fundraising will be channeled to help construct new modern school consisting of the following:

8 - Modern learning classrooms for both boys and girls, 1-Administration Block (Office), 2-Dormitories (one for each gender), 6-Pit latrines, 1-Kitchen and fencing the facility. This is why we need your financial support in the construction of the classrooms which is estimated to cost (USD $70,000).

This proposed school project is scheduled to be implemented through 12 months period and will be started in December 2018.

The project aims to provide and maintain excellence in childhood education and care by providing a quality service in a professional, creative and progressive environment.

A complete constructed Wesleyan Children Learning and Care Centre will act as a home and provide a more personalized schooling for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children within the community.

The organization will ensure financial sustainability of the school through the following measures:

• RHD looks forward to integrate the school operation budget into the organization’s annual budget and cover its operational costs, maintenance and repair through normal fundraising means and accessing funds from global donors who may have long term interest in the project’s success.
• Initiating school micro-business projects such as jaggery plant (sugarcane crusher), to support the school operational costs.
• RHD will organize and involve the community and beneficiaries to take part in the development of the school through a continuous contributions and participation through an annual fundraising kitty whereby all community members, beneficiaries and alumni shall be required to subscribe to and channel their annual contributions.
• Children from able and well off families who are interested in joining the school will get admission into the school and will be required to pay tuition, activity fees and other school levies which will later help pay salaries for teachers and other school utilities.
• Leadership skills and team-building course will be conducted in order to equip target groups with the knowledge and skills that will help them manage their own projects and organize for the school expansion and new activities.
• The capacity building of the school management and staff will be implemented and improved based on skills, good governance, efficiency and financial effectiveness.
• Parents Teachers Association (PTA) has been formed to ensure the school’s future sustainability. RHD’s annual sustainability assessment will be used to review the capacity of the local community and school to take on further aspects of supporting the school after the donor phase. RHD will continue to provide its technical support and facilitation.
• The project team has adopted a comprehensive project monitoring and evaluation system that will ensure that project activities and financial obligations (cash flow, expenditure and purchases) are monitored and evaluated.
