Help Build a Therapy Rehab Gym for Disabled Children in a Public Hospital

We a are a small team of dedicated therapists, made up of Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and Physiotherapists, from a public hospital in Johannesburg South Africa.

We cater for children between the ages of birth and 12 years who present with any and all impairments and or disabilities. We provide ongoing rehabilitation for children who are currently admitted at the hospital as well as those who have been discharged and attend regular therapy services with us.

The most common conditions we see and manage include children with; Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injuries, Burns, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Developmental Delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Learning Difficulties (including the Intellectually Impaired) and many many more. No child will be turned away from our therapy services as long as we are able to provide them.

Currently we only have one small treatment space that is not conducive to effective therapy and drastically minimizes the number of children we are able to provide therapy to at any given time. With the lack of therapy resources and lack of therapy space we are struggling to manage the ever growing case load of children seeking our help and services.

Despite multiple pleas, the Department of Health is unable to assist with any resources for the rehab unit due to financial constraints. Most of what we currently have and are using in therapy has been bought and donated by the treating therapists or family and friends.

With the money raised on this platform we hope to have a section of unused hospital space sectioned off to create a safe, functional and therapeutic space that can be used to increase our capacity to manage and provide more effective therapy to more of our children. We aim to equip the gym space with the necessary rehab equipment, and necessary therapeutic toys and games needed to engage with our children and make therapy fun.

The gym space would be a permanent addition to the pediatric rehab unit that would allow us to provide effective therapy for many many years to come without having to replace more equipment, thus providing us with a long term and sustainable solution for our children and their rehab.
