Sophie Memorial Animal Relief Trust is dedicated to betterment of all sick, injured and homeless animals. The Trust is a living memory of Founder Trustee Kaveri Rana's pet daughter Sophie, who passed away at 12 years.

SMART's Founder Kaveri (34 Years Old), was working in a top shot MNC as an Operations Manager and was visiting Mumbai in 2004, when she witnessed a terrible sight! A mother and her litter lay dead on the side of the road, crushed by a high speed car. There was blood and guts everywhere and in the middle sat a black pup no more than 2 months old. Probably waiting for her mommy to wake up! Kaveri couldn't leave her alone! The poor pup had no one! Kaveri picked her up and took her back to her home in Gurgaon. She named the pup, Sophie. And then the drastic change happened! Leaving her career, Kaveri moved fulltime in rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of stray animals. And she took one big decision, not to have any kids of her own, so that she could serve the voiceless 24/7.

She runs Smart Sanctuary, a safe haven for injured and homeless animals.

SMART's current project is to set up a Physical Therapy Center and a home for the paralyzed dogs.

Kaveri says, "Paralysis is a scary word. Many people with dogs or cats that become paralyzed in one or more limbs think euthanasia is the only answer. But that’s not the case. True, both you and your animal will have to make some changes and adjustments, but depending on what has caused the problem and how soon it is caught, it’s not a death sentence. With the proper care, and lots of love and attention, many paralyzed animals can live long and happy lives. It's just, we don't have enough dedicated facilities for them in our country. But I plan to change that!" And she has success stories attched to the above stated fact. A lot of paralyzed dogs who came to her dragging, covered in magotts and sores are now living a cured and healthy life, thanks to the belief and persistence of Kaveri and SMART.

Kaveri has dedicated her entire life to the betterment of the voiceless! But now, she needs your help to build a home and physical therapy center for the paralyzed animals and give them a second chance at life!

Goals:

1. Hydrotherapy Unit

Hydrotherapy (water exercise) is excellent for dogs suffering from paralysis. With hydrotherapy a dog can exercise all of its legs even if it cannot bear weight or has poor balance. Hydrotherapy can be done in a bathtub or a pool.

2. Physiotherapy Unit

Physiotherapy is a vital resource; muscle tone and strength needs to be maintained following paralysis in dogs.

3. Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are required for animals with hind limb paralysis, offering a welcome return of movement. In fact, thanks to such inventions, some dogs learn to jog, fetch and play as happily as they did before their injury!

4. Kennels

SMART needs to build 10 eco kennels to house our paralyzed dogs. A paralyzed dog should always be kept clean and dry, and moved around regularly to prevent the development of skin ulcers. Hence the kennels will be built of cob and straw bale, surrounded with personal fence and will be enriched with soft green grass so that paralyzed kids could move around without getting sores.

Facilities and necessities required:

- 1 Hydrotherapy Pool (INR 20,000)

- 1 Dog Treadmill (INR 40,000)

- 5 Dog Wheelchairs (INR 40,000)

- 10 Kennels (INR 1,50000)

With your help SMART will be able to open a Paralysis Recovery & Rehabilitation Center in Greater Noida to help critically injured animals.

Please come forward to help in any way you can and help us rehabilitate the paralyzed!

Do share the word. Thank you!
