Help Build a Home in Ethiopia

We’re building a house! We’ve decided to help a widowed woman in Ethiopia that has two young daughters. Her home now has holes in the walls, a dirt floor and no door (see photo above). It could fall down at any moment. We have a site contractor in Ethiopia and a general contractor that will oversee the build.

We were given prices for materials, labor and cost to oversee the build. The build will take about two months to complete. We will send photos of the progress as it happens. The picture at the top of the page (main photo) is what the home will look like when complete.

Information about the Home:

Size - 10 X 10 Meters

Made with sticks instead of clay

Will include a door that can be shut and windows (current home doesn't have either)

Will include a cement floor (current home is dirt floor)

Resources Needed:

Wood from trees (laborers cut down by hand using an axe/hatchet), nails, steel for roof - $3,300

Donkey to help carry materials to her village and to help in the future bringing her products to market - $200

Cement, rock, and sand - $1,200

Site contractor and labor - $1,500

General contractor - Needs money to travel to the village (van only takes to main city then needs to go on foot), overnight and food cost, translator fees - $2,500

Total = $8,700

This hill is on the way to where the house will be built.

Dimensions of the new house - Yes, there is a room for her animals. Hyenas are out at night and would kill them. Her storage room would be for having a sustainable business in the future.
