Can you imagine what it is like not knowing most nights where you are going to sleep? Can you imagine doing that in a country where it is frequently not safe because of rising gun crime, and where you are already targeted because you are a young male?
This has what happened to a dear friend of mine in Jamaica, who can no longer even afford a place to rent on a regular basis. As a young man coming from a poor family with six siblings, he has only been able to obtain temporary menial work since leaving school. He has no father, and since he was young, he has provided whatever financial support he can to his mother and his other siblings, who now cannot afford to house him. His mother has had to make the tough choice of securing the future of her younger children to leave the older one to fend for himself. He currently earns a very minimal wage doing menial jobs and is living in bedsits or other temporary accommodation when he can, which has really detrimentally impacted his sense of well-being and mental health. I have also known him to sleep on beach chairs for weeks at a time and eat once every 2-3 days just to get by. Both he and his mum contribute what they can to his younger brother's education as he is still in school. With only a very limited education and employment options where he lives, he currently has very little prospects of being able to sustain himself long term. There is also no state support where he lives, which is why the situation has been able to get this dire.
I am therefore trying to help with building a modest wooden house on some land which we have secured for him, and which we hope will provide long term housing and security for him. Only then can he look forward to building his life and future working career.
So in aid of this cause, I will be undertaking a firewalk this September - I will be hot footing it across coals that will reach up to a scorching 1200 Fahrenheit...ouch! So please sponsor me and do give anything you can, as every penny really counts. All proceeds will go directly to funding the housing and I will be covering my own costs for training and the event.
Not being able to have this basic need fulfilled, and not being able to guarantee his safety, is something none us should have to face, especially when it is not so costly to fix it.
