Update 17 Oct 2022

The need for funding is a little more acute now as my funds are running very low. I am also offering myself for hire as a freelance copywriter and translator since I do need to make a living rather than depend on donations.

Finances remain one of my biggest obstacle to recovery with dignity as it determines if I am able to go for rehab or get two square meals a day, something even my Kad OKU can’t help. Family does help with utilities and the other adjunct therapies but I generally am on my own and have not seen any of them for almost a month.

Even if you're unable to contribute financially, a simple act of sharing this post helps.

###

Hello! I sincerely hope you are all well.

My name is Bob and until May this year, I was actually a practising acupuncturist who was helping folks feel well and better. Unfortunately in late May of 2022, I suffered a sudden stroke that totally paralysed the right half of my body and slurred my speech. The irony of May being Stroke Awareness Month was not lost on me.

A stroke, sometimes called a brain attack, occurs when something blocks blood supply to part of the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. A stroke can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death.

I was quite fortunate to have caught the symptoms early enough to survive but it was an extremely traumatic experience. A huge part of my self worth and identity comes from my communication skills and I suddenly lost the ability to write and speak coherently overnight.

And after my discharge from hospital I suddenly found myself bundled into a nursing home where I spent the next six weeks with only assisted living care but no facilities to support recovery (not even bars in the bathroom!) The only saving grace was that it was relatively cheap and a stone’s throw away from the Petaling Jaya chapter of the National Stroke Association (NASAM) where I had my physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions.

With no health insurance, I have relied on the goodwill of family and friends to help fund my recovery and have relatively quick progress with me starting to walk with some aid one month after my stroke. My speech is also slurring much less.

My relatively rapid recovery has been due, I believe, to a combination of timely conventional medicine, physical and occupational therapy as well as complementary therapies like acupuncture, Reiki and RTT hypnotherapy. I probably won't be able to afford all these if some like the physical therapy and hypnotherapy were not sponsored by well wishers.

Unfortunately I am running short of funds as I enter into this new phase of recovery. I am eagerly heading down the road to recovery and hope to regain my ability to go back to work in helping others, with the benefit of personal experience.

Thank you again you your support.

With genuine love, warmth and affection,

Bob Kee

According to the Brunnstrom Stages of Stroke Recovery, I may be anywhere from Stage 2 to Stage 5 of recovery, depending on where I look. There's definitely some stiffness in the upper arms that makes movement difficult but not much stiffness in the legs.I made a visit to the Social. . . . .

This week has been pretty intense with physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions as well a dental appointment at NASAM, UMMC and HRC, keeping me outdoors almost daily and leaving me quite fatigued. Transportation costs have similarly gone up which is still why I keep the fundraiser running, at least until
