Shaarei Rachamim Tzfat is a Sephardic Beit Knesset ( synagogue) started by Rabbi Rachamim Yair when he and his family settled in Tzfat from Persia over 400 years ago. The synagogue still holds weekly Shabbat morning services and holiday services. The current building is 180 years old only as a result of the earthquake that destroyed much of Tzfat in 1837.

Shaarei Rachamim is still being taken care of by Moshe Yair, one of the descendants of Rabbi Yair as the Yair family has been in Tzfat for over seven generations. Many of the members are also descendants of other families from Persia that settled in Tzfat generations ago.

Many of you know me from my time on Arutz Sheva Radio and Israel News Talk Radio, or through my work with Jews for Judaism. My wife, Leah and I settled in Tzfat almost 9 years ago and I have been attending services at Shaarei Rachamim for most of that time. As a matter of fact I live 2 doors away from the synagogue and share the neighborhood with Moshe Yair and his mother Rachel who adopted us into the family.

Unfortunately, and especially after Covid we have been forced to pay local Yeshiva students to come on Shabbat and holidays in order to have a minyan (quorum of 10 men). In addition, there is the monthly cost of paying the Baal Koreh (Torah Reader) and a Chazan to lead the holiday services. I still remember 2 years ago on Rosh HaShana when Moshe was sitting on his balcony crying because for the first time in 400 years there was not going to be a service due to the lockdowns. It would be a shame to see such a holy place cease to exist when it would require just a little help from some friends to continue.

This is why I am starting this crowdfund campaign. Please help us to maintain and continue to bless the Tzfat community and keep the legacy alive of the Yair family who have given so much to this community.
