Our Dad has had a major back problem which started suddenly since last year April 2015 a week before his 50th Birthday (10th April). Since then it has gotten worse with each passing day. After a MRI they discovered that when he was younger he had Sherman’s disease, without knowing it.This has caused his spine to deteriorate over time. He also has Scoliosis – curvature of the spinal cord. We don’t know what caused it but his bottom half of his spine (from mid-back down) is crushing his spinal cord and it is causing permanent and constant pain. His legs shake when he stands for too long and he can’t stand for more than 5 minutes or he will collapse. At the moment he can walk about 50m but all depends on the day & how bad the pain is. He is deteriorating at a very fast rate. On the 5th July, a Spinal surgeon in Pretoria told him he has +-6 months from now, left before he will lose the ability in his legs permanently, & end up in a wheel chair - if he does not have this operation. He has been told the operation will cost between R300 000- R500 000 – that’s if all runs smoothly. He sadly doesn’t have medical aid. This operation will take up to +-9 hours After this he will have to be in ICU for about 3-4 days all depends how the operation goes – he will have to be in hospital for about 11 days. Then has 6-8 weeks - recovery period where he will only be allowed to stand or lie. NO sitting allowed. Since Alex appointment in July his standing has gotten worse, he has collapsed 2 -3 times in the shower that he is scared to shower on own without someone watching him. If he walks or drives too much on one day, the next day he is incapacitated and full of pain. Schedule 5 meds don’t work on him, he still feels the pain. We finally managed to get to Jhb General to see the surgeon, and find out the possibility of doing it there but he has been put on list, but the waiting list is too long.He might lose the ability to move before this will happen. Please help us to get our dad this much needed operation before he loses the ability to walk and not able to walk us down the aisle or play with his grandchildren.Any donation no matter how small will help us!
