I am a Sudanese medical student who has got a chance to participate in the international exchange program arranged by the International Federation of Medical Students Association that offers clerkships to medical students abroad.
This exchange program provides medical students around the world with the opportunity to obtain certain qualifications to work in a diverse setting, develop an experience in a diffrent healthcare system with a distinct set of cultural and educational views and to learn about global health issues, primary health concerns and basic epidemiology of the host country. Furthermore, the program supports global health knowledge, and promotes the internationalization of universities.
Over the years, many students from my university have participated in this program. Unfortunately and given that Sudan is a 3rd world country with a stagnant economy, niether the university nor the government provides funding or any kind of financial support to the students. Ergo, they have always seeked refuge in different state ministries or private corporations to secure the required travelling fees.
This year I was fortunate enough to be able to compete and score the 8th place amongst almost 100 applicants from my university, and get an exchange opportunity in Italy, but unfortunate enough to have that happen in such a critical period in the history of my country, in which the protests have been going on for more than 4 months, the economy have decayed in an unpreceding manner and recently the regime has fallen and the political situation hasn't been stable. All of these circumstances have made it difficult for me to secure my funding through the traditional ways, and taking into account that my program is due next July, I decided to make this fundraising initiative so as to be able to make my dream come true.
