Who am I?

I’ve only had one career all my life, which is filmmaking. It’s been 20 years. In that time, I switch effortlessly between conceptualising, writing, shooting and editing, in varying degrees, for each and every piece of work I've done. You can view some of my past works at https://vimeo.com/user1788683.

Why this campaign?

Recently, I became a documentary producer because long-form content is the last unconquered bastion in my career. Short of a feature film, every other content form I have done. It's been quite the culture shock, the biggest being that the visual quality of what I produce is capped by the cameramen I get, of whom I may not even get to choose. As someone who takes a lot of pride in crafting, it's been… frustrating.

What's the problem?

The problem is simple: to get shots the way I want them exactly, I need my own equipment. Sometime in 2017, I sold all my cameras and lenses because: 1) they were behind in technology, and; 2) I had company-issued gear at my previous place of employment I could use.

But now that I am producing half- and hour-long documentaries, to not have a camera and lenses quickly became a real impediment; I felt like I was short of an arm.

Which is why I am starting this crowdfunding. I have, to date, spent just shy of a five-figure sum just so that I can arm myself with the ability to go out and grab shots when my documentaries call for the need to.

At this point, you’re probably asking: do you not have company gear to use? Well, without incriminating myself, let’s just say, because of institutional mindset and processes, it is waaaay easier for me to have my own gear than not. And it is the reason why I needed to take matters into my own hand, simply because I refuse to accept the status quo and settle for less.

What's needed?

Your contribution goes to:

  • Pro-grade video camera
  • Wide-angle lens at least f/2.8 or faster
  • Standard zoom lens at least f/2.8 or faster
  • Telephoto zoom lens at least f/2.8 or faster
  • On-camera monitor
  • Tripod
  • Batteries
  • Miscellaneous small accessories for rigging

How can you help?

So, this is me shamelessly appealing to you for any contribution big or small in helping this strapped and frustrated filmmaker in his quest to make documentaries about Singapore—about us—that hopefully matter and contribute to the annuls of our nation’s history.

What's in for you?

Very soon, you will see my documentaries on national TV and, if you are familiar with my work, you will very likely recognise shots that I had personally shot. The reward for you, if you are convinced, is that you would have helped to elevate the content that matters to us all.
