Campaign Story
This campaign is being set up by Louise Ohashi to help bring together people who would like to support Joël (recipient) and Heather (donor) in their journey for a successful kidney transplant. Earlier this year a funding campaign helped pay for the costs associated with the transplant. The thoughts, prayers, and generous contributions to the first Go Get Funds campaign played a key role in their fight. They are so grateful for the outpouring of support.
Joël and Heather entered the hospital on March 16 for their scheduled transplant on March 17. Unfortunately, a slightly high temperature forced the doctors to postpone the transplant. This triggered a new series of challenges. First, Joël was required to start dialysis treatment which saw him hospitalized for a week in early April. The deposit he paid for the transplant was used to pay for the week of hospitalization.
While they are insured, the hospital administration have asked for another deposit of ¥1 million (almost $8,000 USD) before the transplant can proceed and this needs to be paid upfront by Joël. It is unknown how much he will eventually receive back but he will definitely be out of pocket and he is not working so needs to cover his living costs. What is certain is that he cannot have the operation without the deposit. There may be a possibility of a loan but it is not certain and he is really not in the position to cover the surgery, let alone pay interest.
With the transplant scheduled for May 19 and the deposit due on May 1 the challenge to raise funds is immense, but we cannot give up after coming this far!
Joël is a caring teacher who has worked hard for many years to support his students and colleagues. He has done countless hours of volunteer work and is always one of the first to help when others are in need. It is difficult to ask for the generosity of others, particularly twice, so Joël was reluctant to openly share his difficulties. However, it was easy to read between the lines. These are tough times - physically, emotionally and financially. If anyone can spare even a small donation, it would be gratefully received. The operation deposit is due on May 1 so early donations are particularly welcome, but as there are a mountain of expenses, contributions at any time would be gratefully received.
For those who do not know Joël, please rest assured you are supporting someone who deserves a random act of kindness. If you know him, you already know what I mean. Not everyone is in a position to help financially but you can spread the word. Please share this far and wide. The most powerful waterfall is nothing without each tiny drop of water. Together, we can have a huge impact. To check approximate exchange rates: https://www.xe.com

Many Thanks! Deposit Target Reached!
Update posted by Joel Darwin Laurier at 02:18 pmThank you very much to everyone who supported this campaign. Your generosity in Joël's time of need is very much appreciated. He has told me that with the funds raised here and those he received directly after launching this campaign, he now has enough for the deposit for his kidney. . . . .
