Help a Disabled Veteran Find Peace in China

My name is Marshal "Doug" Payne. I'm an anxiety disabled Marine veteran who studied journalism at the Defense Information School and wrote for The Windsock Newspaper at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. I have narrated military events, worked for Florida State government in consumer affairs, and made it a priority in my life to be a public servant.

During these years I struggled on a number of fronts. But by highlighting the heroic deeds that others have done in the service of protecting people and assisting every day consumers find the resources they need to be successful, I found strength. That's the strength I'm looking for now, to develop within myself, in an environment that will bolster my resolve and my ability to continue being an advocate.

I feel a strong calling to go to China to study Mandarin, culture, and train in Shaolin Kung Fu alongside Buddhist monks. Many persons of tremendous leadership have followed similar paths, such as Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple. The end goal is to obtain whole wellness and to continue my passion for service by being a translator, and -- ultimately -- to come back to the States as a teacher of Shaolin practices by opening my own Shaolin Kung Fu school.

I studied mostly Wah Lum Praying Mantis Kung Fu as a teen in Orlando and later Wing Chun. In the Marines, I excelled at Marine Corps Martial Arts.

A question is often asked of new martial arts students: "Why do you seek Kung Fu?" Many might say to get better at sports or to become stronger or learn a skill. The reason I seek the art of Kung Fu is: "To live."

The costs involved would be passport and Visa fees, school tuition, and the flight. And, of course luggage a few other travel essentials as well. The tuition covers meals, lodging, laundry, etc.
