Im a 52 year old disabled man, I was injured in Nov 2012, my job (Safeway Inc) refused to pay my sick leave and I was forced to use my paid vacation, 3 weeks later when my vacation time ended, I was forced back to work with my injuries (lateral tear, left knee and severe torn meniscus, left knee) under the threat of termination. In March 2013 I was finally put on temp workers com. In Nov 2013, (almost a year later) Safeway finally agreed to pay for my corrective surgery, by then the damage was done, I can no longer walk more than 20 feet without loosing my balance, I have to use a cane for the rest of my life, also now due to the immobility, I have diabetes, high blood pressure and weight gain. I hired a worker comp attorney and filed for Social secuity and state diability in March of 2014. In May of 2014 Safeway Inc. took me off workers comp and put me on temp disability, so my income went from $1126 a month to $920 a month. Also in April of 2014, I lost my home of 23 years in Oakland Ca. due to damage, it took 3 weeks to find a new affordable apartment 32 miles away in Pittsburg, Ca. I had to live in a Motel 6 for 3 weeks. Between my rent going from $650 a month to $1000 a month, $1800 to Motel 6 for three weeks and another $2500 to my new landlord has wiped out my bank account. in Aug 2014 Safeway Inc. said they would no longer pay temp disability payments. Ive lost all income, Ive applied to several assistance programs only to be told either their not accepting applications or only help families with children or vets, Ive contacted both state disability and social security only to be told that it takes months to process and no other emergency assistance is available, all I need is enough money just to cover my rent for 4 to 6 months until my disability situation is settled, until your faced with loosing everything and becoming homeless, its scary and you feel all alone. All I ask if you know someone that have almost became homeless, was homeless or worked with the homeless, especially if their older, consider helping, thank you for reading my plight.
