Help a Deaf Child Hear 👂🏾

Seven Steps Academy for the Deaf is a special school situated in Zonnebloem, Cape Town, and caters for learners with hearing loss from Pre-Grade R to Grade 12. We provide tuition in the auditory-oral method of communication (speaking) instead of the manual (Sign Language) method of communication. The majority of students wear hearing technology e.g hearing aids, cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids, and this technology allows our learners to have access to sound but also need batteries in order to work.

The lifespan of a hearing aid battery varies between 3 - 14 days, which means they have to be replaced regularly. Hearing aids also require regular minor repairs which the in-house audiologist is able to do. The cost of the parts for minor repairs (such as tubes, tone hooks and filters) add up and parents struggle to afford the costs of the required parts. The majority of our learners come from poor socio-economic environments and the parents are struggling to keep up with costs. Sadly, this has a negative impact on the children where if the hearing aid batteries are depleted or hearing aids are broken, they cannot hear and their learning is hampered.

As it stands, the school relies heavily on sponsorship and we are in need of additional financial support. Ensuring that the children are able to have batteries replaced and minor repair jobs done are essential in equipping them to perform at their best.
