Statistics reveal that 40% of the South African population live in rural areas and that up to 75% of these people are living in poverty, many unsure of where their next meal is coming from. Many have no electricity or water supplied. Very, very few have access to new and emerging technologies. Nelson Mandela would turn in his grave if he knew this was happening 27 years after he replaced apartheid with democracy..

On the positive side, South Africa enjoys widespread satellite and wireless coverage,

2DAY-SA is an online startup that uses basic internet and mobile technology to help rural people adjust to, cope better with, and take advantage of current and emerging online technologies.

Amongst others, it will do this by linking those facing similar rural challenges (eg newest developments in fence construction, pipe-laying, making your own fertiliser; maximising crops on a smallholder farm, etc), and will also feature access to news, education programs, construction, health, heads-up on municipal initiatives, self-improvement, and more.

The plan is to select a suitable young person from each of 1000 villages, pay them a small salary, provide each of them with a smart phone and data, and link them to a network that will process and expose this information for the benefit of all the participants. These young people will act as reporters and will represent a clear picture of what is happening '2DAY' in 'SA' for all to see..

This is a vital step forward for millions, and the other 51 countries in Africa will be watching closely.
